Article Dashboard - After Installation Touch Ups and Tips
Article Dashboard free article directory script is a great free script to start with in your venture to getting your own article directory off the ground and making some money. There are however a few issues that need to be looked over and taken care of.
First issue is you want to make sure that you double check the setup.php file. Check to see that the $base_url has your url in there properly, this should be http://www.domain.com, make sure the www. is in there. There are a few reasons for this. The first reason being that your Article RSS Feeds won't be able to be copied to yahoo and a few other RSS submission places without either manually adding the www. to the front of the RSS url or copy and pasting the url into the browser then recopying it again. Most users will not think of this and won't bother with your feeds once they try it once and find it not working or not being able to be found.
There is also another important reason why this first issue needs attention. It's really a simple mistake I see many Article Dashboard owners making because we are so used to just typing in domain.com and the browser automatically converting the url if required. The search engine spiders will have problems properly spidering and indexing your sites. They will spider and index most category, profile, and main urls but will miss most of the article urls. It's mainly the article urls that you want to be indexed the most. This is where the majority of your traffic will come from. The .htaccess file has a rewrite condition that converts or redirects domain.com into www.domain.com, when you fail to make sure the www. is in your url in the setup.php file, this causes address problems. You want to make sure the rewrite to www. condition is left in the .htaccess file and the www. in the setup.php is there, and also when your doing your linking try your best to always use the www. in the url. The more that match the better off you will be.
Second problem you will probably notice is in the latest updated script your Top Authors will only show 2 Top Authors. There is a couple ways to fix this problem. Make sure you upload both the Top Authors and the Functions files. One won't work without the other.
To Adjust your right nav panel width you can do so from the mainstyle.css file. Make sure to have these 2 lines in the .rightnavbox:
width: 200px;
align: right;
Make sure not to have images, banners or forms that are wider than the specified width of the .rightnavbox otherwise it will push the width over the specified value.
Another thing to keep in mind using the footer.tpl.. When you edit the footer.tpl and want things to show up at the bottom of the page be sure to add any text or images after these lines:
Add whatever you like here
That is very important or else whatever you add will show up in the right nav cell.
Another minor issue that pops up here and there is the tags such as {BASEURL} . In the header.tpl sometimes the search function won't work properly or maybe your .css file won't get read and your site looks way off. This issue can be fixed easily by replacing {BASE.URL} with your full url such as http://www.domain.com/indexser.php or http://www.domain.com/mainstyle.css

Now your all set. How do I get visitors to my site and get some articles submitted. Well the traditional marketing methods work. Linking.
