This is, as the title suggests, a collection of four valleys that combine to form one of the most varied groups of ski runs in the Alps. The area has a very strong swiss-french culture and as a result it has become very popular with even the most cosmopoliton of skiers. There are also an enormous number of ski runs that are extremely diverse. The terrain across this area provides a great variety of skiing options. The four valleys area has views to the Matterhorn and of Mount Blanc. Situated 1500m from ski level it is in a beautiful position for stunning views of the Alps. Verbier shares common ski passes with many neighbouring ski areas. La Tzounaz, Thyon, Nendaz and Veysonnaz all link up with Verbier and as a result visitors to the areas can ski across over 400kms of marked ski runs. These runs provide something for skiers of every ability. The ski runs in the Verbier region are renowned for providing some of the most testing situations in the Alps and more so the area is acclaimed for the quality of the off-piste options. So if you are an avid off-piste skier looking to wander into unchartered territory then Verbier is probably the place for you. There are 10 black slopes, 35 green and blue slopes and 55 red slopes in the area meaning that whatever your ability there is something for you in Verbier. The area also benefits from two nursery slopes that are situated near the town centre. The slopes of Savoleyres offer gentle rolling hills for the new ski or snowboarder and for advanced skiers there are a number of classic slopes. Mont-fort, Tortin, Mont-Gele and Chassoure are all skiing classics that offer much for those that are looking for a challenge. The buildings in Verbier have a beautiful symbiosis with their surroundings. Built with a classic chalet style in mind they utilise locally sourced materials which provide a great deal of cohesion with one another and help the village sit comfortably in the mountains. The area also benefits from a great deal of natural light. It is situated on a south west facing plateau and as a result of often drenched in sun. The area is unremittingly beautiful and this is one of the primary factors that contributes to its popularity. Celebrities such as Diana Ross, Sarah Ferguson and James Blunt frequent the resort and the area is well renowned for the level of repeat custom it receives. It appears that once you have been there once you will want to return. Alongside the prestigious slopes the area of Verbier is also home to number of festivals and events. Every August the 'grand raid' takes place. This is widely regarded as the hardest mountain bike race in Switzerland. The summer is of particular interest to classical music fans as Verbier becomes home to a regular classical music festival. A speed snowboarding event called 'Xtreme Verbier' takes place yearly and Verbier has announced that it will host the final of the Freeride World Tour in March 2008. Shaun Parker is an expert skier.
