Protecting Your Asphalt Driveway
Have you ever rode by a really nice house and then were shocked at what ugly disrepair the driveway was in? The only thing more distressing than seeing someone another house's driveway looking like this is if it is your house's driveway that looks like this. It is a proven fact that when you list a property on the market to sell, a faulty driveway might be a disadvantage. It may be one of the first areas that a buyer will pay attention to as they drive up to a home. When you are lucky and have a driveway that is in terrific repair, depending on where you live it might not always be that way. People that live in regions that endure bad winters or more than average rainfall, normally have the worst driveway issues. There are a number of precautions that may keep your driveway from cracking, chipping, and breaking apart. Reseal the driveway prior to cracks beginning or when the dark black color begins to gray. As soon as the cracks have been made, water can get into them and then underneath the asphalt. When it freezes, it will expand and instigate even more cracking. Resealing your asphalt driveway is an essential job, but might be a task you could do on your own. When the driveway does have cracks already, this is what you should do. If you can, clear out the base of the crack so it is wider there than on the top surface of the crack. When you have deep openings, you probably need to put in sand or backer rod crack filler first. Backer rod is moisture withstanding crack filler. Fill up the spot to within 1/2 inch of the top. Now you are ready to use regular crack filler. These fillers can be purchased in a liquid that can be poured into the cracks or you can buy a tube that is a denser solution that can be applied with a caulking gun. After you put the filler in, you can use a piece of wood or trowel to smooth the surface. Be sure you can have several rain free days before you start the resealing procedure. Scrub the driveway thoroughly with an asphalt cleaning solution. This solution will take off oil spills that might eventually induce soft spots from its petroleum content. Allow it to dry entirely. The tools you will use to put on the sealer you obtained, are exactly like the ones you use for applying paint. A lengthy roller handle and a long nap roller sleeve should work well or you may use a large squeegee. A paint brush will be handy to cover areas that are hard to cover conveniently, like the curbs. Be sure to get all places thoroughly and always use the instructions to the letter. This should keep a driveway safe from cracking and water destruction for the time implied by the products you purchased.
