Lawns with Drainage Issues
65502 Home & Family Feb 29, 2008 jcorkern10 Lawns with Drainage Issues For people that may live in places subject to drought, giving your lawn the water it needs may be their biggest obstacle when it comes to getting the lush, green lawn of their dreams. For those who reside in climates where there might be an over abundance of rain and snow, the problem may be exactly the reverse. Although a dry, burnt lawn might not be very appealing to own, neither is a yard that stays constantly flooded and muddy. When your yard has inefficient landscaping and you live in a wet climate, it will wreak havoc on a lawn. Water might stand for days at a time after a heavy rain. When the water has a habit of standing around the home, this may be an even larger and more damaging problem. If water is allowed to stand close to the base of the house, it may eventually cause leaking in the foundation. This could permit water to gather underneath the home where your crawl space is or it will create leaking or flooding in a basement. Basement and crawlspace flooding may usually be taken care of if the drainage and landscaping in your yard is done properly. Gutters will be one of the most effective remedies to help cut down the amount of water that might stand too close to a house foundation. Keeping gutters in good repair is essential. It keeps the water that comes off of a roof headed in the right direction, away from the foundation, this is their main function. Even with proper gutter installation and maintenance, if the ground near the house foundation slopes downward toward the home, water will continue to gather and puddle there. The angle of the lawn must be higher near the base of the residence foundation and gradually run downwards. This allows water to flow away from a house on all sides. When your yard is likely to collect water to near the house, you should either repair the issue yourself or enlist a yard care specialist to repair it for you. Not only can you have a better lawn to walk on, less issues with pesky insects like mosquitoes, but you are safe guarding the house foundation and stopping possible structural devastation also. Structural damage to a home foundation usually is a result of water damage. Ensuring the landscaping is slanted adequately should save you thousands of dollars in costly repairs to a home later. Structural damage to a residence will definitely bring down its value.
