HEPA 101 - Everything you Should know about HEPA Filters
6529 Home & Family > Home Improvement Mar 1, 2007 Elite Home HEPA 101 - Everything you Should know about HEPA Filters Isn??t fresh air wonderful? In this polluted world in which we live, sometimes
the quality of air is not at its best. When this is the case, we owe it to
ourselves and our family to try to clean it to the best of our abilities. Home
air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters are what make a difference between
clean air and potentially harmful air.

Air pollutants are all around us. Tiny particles of any solid that is small
enough to breathe in can potentially get trapped in your lungs and cause
health problems. Sometimes when we live in dirty environments filled with
smog, smoke, or coal, these particles can actually get inside your lungs and
will settle, due to the heavy nature of the particles, into the deep crevices
of your bronchioles.

Technology of today has enabled us to combat the likelihood of excessive
amounts of inhaled particulates and prevent the health problems
associated with them. This technology can be found through the use of
home air purifiers or vacuums equipped with
HEPA filters. HEPA filters are high grade filters that are closely knit so as to
not allow large particulates through. They are usually fashioned in a slight
accordion-like configuration and are either flat sheets or cylinders. Cylinder
models will provide the best results because there is more surface area
and more opportunity to clean the air. These are typically in layers and
have matted glasslike fibers in between to help filter pollutants. HEPA
filters tend to work best with low airflow in a room to fit the specific output
of whatever home air purifier or vacuum cleaner you choose.

To keep your home filled with the cleanest air possible, here are some
things to keep in mind:

1 - You should choose a home air purifier with a HEPA filter that fits the size
of your room. One is usually enough per room but for larger rooms with lots
of traffic, two is a good bet. There are several available on the market
today that are reasonably priced.

2 - Change your filters regularly. HEPA filters should be changed in home air
purifiers when dust cakes begin to form. Caked dust will inhibit airflow and
won??t effectively clean your air.

An air purifier is not enough. Since pet dander and dust mites tend to be
heavy in nature, air purifiers aren??t as effective for those specific allergens.
Therefore, vacuum with a HEPA filtered vacuum before you start up your
home air purifier or if it stays on continuously, allow extra time after
vacuuming for your purifier to do its job effectively. If you have multiple
home air purifiers, it may be a good idea to temporarily bring a few or so
into the same room that you are cleaning to really clean the air well while
you are stirring up the dust into the air.
