While granite provides an opulent look to a room, there are several things a prospective comsumer should know before making the decision to use it. The first thing one should know is the cost associated with granite. The typical home has approximately ninety square feet of kitchen countertop space. The cost to install granite in an area this size is about ten thousand dollars. A larger kitchen with more counter space will increase the cost. If granite is chosen as the material to be used the cost should be figured into the budget well in advance of beginning the project. Adding granite later will increase the budget significantly. Since granite is a naturally occurring stone it is available in limited colors. The color variations are different in every piece of granite. Also the patterns are never the same in two pieces of granite. Every slab is a unique, one-of-a-kind work of art that is provided by nature. This makes working with granite a difficult task at times. An expert will be able to provide needed information concerning which pieces would work well together in a large kitchen. Granite is a porous stone and requires routine maintenance. The stone is sealed at installation and should be sealed at least once a year thereafter to maintain its beauty. Even with the stone being sealed, care should be taken when placing anything on the surface. Almost anything placed on granite can cause a stain. Spilt liquids must be cleaned immediately and the counter should be wiped clean as soon as food is removed from the surface. Granite does not withstand heat and hot objects should never be placed on it. Never buy granite on-line. The home shopping networks are aggressively marketing granite. While they may be very reputable companies, the only way to ensure the color and pattern are exactly what is wanted it is best to see it in person. This is a major investment and time must be taken to see it in person. Always make sure that the slab chosen is the same one that will be installed in the home and not a slab that is being used as representative of the granite available. Get all agreements in writing. Installation of granite must always be left to the professionals. The average person does not have the expertise required to properly cut and install granite. Installers should come to the home and make exact measurements. Once granite is cut there can be no changes made. This could prove to be very costly if a homeowner chooses to install the granite themselves. If a mistake is made the company will be responsible for replacing the ruined granite.
