One of the first questions that a budding autograph collector must ask is themselves is how much they can afford to spend on them. This is an essential question for collectors of any item really when you think about it. Any kind of collectible can get to a price point that makes us stop and question if it is worth it. A lot of would be autograph hound don't realize all that is involved in the undertaking. For example if you are going to try to collect the autographs of famous musicians or singers you have to buy the concert tickets to get yourself into the venue to begin with not to mention the costs for traveling. In lieu of going to venues like this you can also take advantage of more public events such as weddings, honeymoons, and vacations. If you are anything like other autograph collectors there will probably be certain ones that will have special meanings to you because of certain events or because you have a certain attachment to that particular person. This is the thing that gets some people into the business, just that ability to be able to have a reason to get close to the stars. If you are going to be serious about the autograph business you need to do some preplanning so that you know exactly who you want to collect from and you have a game plan to get the signatures you want. Most avid collectors have a list of people that they want, kind of a wish list of sorts. You need to do this so you will have focus and goals to get the ones you want. You can also enlist the help of friends and relatives if you let them know whose autograph you are seeking. You never know where someone will show up. They could be rubbing shoulders with some famous person at a sporting event, estate sale, or a concert. I have run into famous people at casinos, such as the time I met Terry Bradshaw in Las Vegas in an elevator. I also lived across the street from Michael Jordan when he was living in Sarasota Florida over a decade ago. You could have friends or relatives in similar situations. Sometimes your friends and relatives may already have an autograph you want and you just haven't asked. You need to make sure that you let everyone you are acquainted with know what it is that you are doing.
