Occasionally, the pre-filter must be replaced, but how often that is needed will depend on the type of filter, the size of the water filter system and the overall amount of liquid that is passed through it. Most reverse osmosis systems will come with detailed instructions for use and maintenance of the units, as well as guidelines for replacement of both the pre-filter and the osmosis membrane. The method of purification used in reverse osmosis water filters has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as one of the most effective methods of producing clean and safe drinking fluid. This is particularly noteworthy, as the primary goal of the CDC is to reduce the spread of disease by any means possible. Contaminated fluid is one way that disease is spread, especially in disaster situations.
