Cooking With The Children Looking On
Teaching a child to cook can be an exciting time for the child but stressful for you. All children want to learn how to cook and can get in the way a time or two when the cook is trying to prepare a meal for the family to eat. Children are good at asking all sorts of questions about the things that are cooked and will probably get to be very irritating after a while. The child does not care what utensils are being used to cook in. They will peer into crock pots and skillets and even the stove to see what is going on. They might ask a million questions about how long things cook and how long they have to wait to eat them. A child is liable to ask where the meat came from and then ask again when they might expect to eat some of that meat just because it looks delicious enough to eat now. Baking seems to be the one thing that all kids want to learn how to do. There are so many cakes and cookies that can be made and kids want to know how to cook all of them. They know that they will have parties at school and they come up with a decision that they are going to bake them next time all by themselves. A parent might have to caution the child to never touch the stove or turn it on. Children can be amused while they learn to cook and bake things. They can have all sorts of fun mixing cookie dough and learning to roll it out and press out shapes with cookie cutters. They might even learn that the dough cuts better when its cold so a parent can rest easy knowing that the dough will be going into the refrigerator very shortly and not sit in a bowl on top of counter being eaten in small bits and pieces. Children can also learn that things can be frozen for use at a later date. They will see the parent buy groceries and place meats in the freezer and eventually they will learn to tie this in to putting away for safekeeping. They will also learn that cookie dough can be frozen too, so that they can be used for the next party at school. By this time, the children are thrilled with what they have learned and might leave their parents alone for a while in the kitchen to prepare other things for the evening meal. Young cooks turn into good cooks with enough time and patience and parents know this very well. They probably have several girls in the house who have put them through the learning to cook paces before with great success. These children will learn more about cooking and helping out around the house, and one day they will have their own families to care for and a little girl of their own that they can teach to cook in the same way that their Mother did.
