49872 Travel & Leisure > Destinations Oct 16, 2007 amarticles-linda The City that Lies on the River Ob Novosibirsk is a city that prides itself on size it is the third-largest city in Russia and the city lies along the Ob River in the West Siberian Plain. It is the capital of Siberia. The city was the first in Siberia in which a metro system was established. In 1993 Novosibirsk celebrated it's 100th anniversary. The largest Siberian Stock the Siberian banks and Commodity Exchanges are situated here in the city. It is the seat of a university and a scientific research centre and has an opera and ballet companies. From 1893 until 1925, Novosibirsk was called Novonikolayevsk . It was named for Tsar Nicholas II in 1895. During World War II many Russian factories from the west were moved here. In the central part of Novosibirsk there are several markets to be found. The markets consist of little huts. There are a lot of open air cafes on Lenina square during summer. There are no self-service laundrettes in Novosibirsk. All the best shops are located on Vokzalnaya Magistral St, which is a big avenue running from the railway station. The rich cultural life of the city is provided by six theatres, a local orchestra and a musical conservatory. There are many young people in Novosibirsk, so dance music is quite popular here. You can find many clubs with Russian techno-pop stuff. The local airport is called Tolmachovo, and is located 20 km west from the Centrum. The most popular form of transport in the city are taxis. They are virtually every where. The Novosibirsk Opera house is the biggest in Russia and is an architectural masterpiece. The building was built during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 and the grand opening happened on May 9, 1945, the Victory Day. The theatre has three halls the large one seats 2,000, concert 550 seats and the small 130 seats. The Zoo is a world renowned zoo and a popular tourist attraction to the city. The zoo has over 4000 species of animals, and actively participates in thirty-two different societies for preserving endangered species. Around 700,000 people visit the zoo each year. Lenina Square is the main sight in Novosibirsk on Vokzalnaya Magistral street and you will not miss it. It is a monument to Soviet time that impresses with huge statues of workers, soldiers, and Lenin himself. It is a popular place for going out among Novosibirsk people and a good place to meet some one.
