Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island. More than half of the island has never been cleared of vegetation. Kangaroo Island remains one of the most unspoilt natural wonders of the world The Island is a 30-minute flight south from Adelaide. Today, fishing, farming, agriculture and tourism are thriving industries and Kangaroo Island has some of the most stunning and unspoilt coast, and well presented National Parks and Conservation Parks in Australia. Kangaroo Island is one of South Australia's most popular tourist attractions, attracting over 140,000 visitors each. It has four town centres Kingscote, Penneshaw, Parndana and American River. Kingscote was previously known as Queenscliffe. There are several shops and services in Kingscote This was the first settlement in South Australia and the capital of the island. Penneshaw a small, pretty town. The beach at Penneshaw is known as Hog Bay, and is an excellent sandy swimming beach. Parndana the only major town on the island not on the coast. It was called The Place of Little Gums and was established in 1963 to service the booming Kangaroo Island farming community of the time. American River's beautiful blue waters are a haven for bird life, especially pelicans and is one of the state's oldest resorts. American River was named by American sealers who sheltered there in the 1800's. Eucalyptus distilling was once a major industry on the Island. Emu Ridge is the only commercial distillery still in operation in South Australia This plant is the dense multi-stemmed tree to about 5 metres which lines the road as you travel north, and its distribution is restricted almost entirely to Kangaroo Island. Safe swimming is possible on the northern beaches, such as Emu Bay, Stokes Bay or Snelling Beach. On the north shore of Kangaroo Island lies. Emu Bay which is a beautiful long white beach There is a jetty for fishing and boat ramp. Emu Bay was originally intended to be the main port of the island. Snelling Beach is a small beach perfect for long walks and beachcombing. at the mouth of Middle River Seal Bay is a large sandy beach and dune area where Australian sea lions rest and nurse their young and you can see sight of sea lions surfing in the waves. You can walk right onto the beach amongst Australian Sea Lions in their own natural habitat. You are only allowed on this beach with a Kangeroo Island guide or a ranger.
