The Thrill Of Pheasant Hunting With Labrador Retrievers
47524 Recreation & Sports > Hunting Oct 11, 2007 wingsofsuccess The Thrill Of Pheasant Hunting With Labrador Retrievers The Labrador retriever has long been considered the best pheasant hunting dog for the job. Not only are they a hunter's favorite, but according to the AKC they are the top ranked family pet. The lab has superior hunting ability, with a gentle and giving personality. They have been bred for centuries for desirable bird hunting characteristics, including a willingness to be trained, loyalty, love for the hunt, and a soft mouth, making him the perfect bird hunter's companion. Labs originated in Newfoundland and were known as the St. John's Newfoundland where they assisted fisherman by pulling their boats from the icy water, and retrieving game and fish. Their coats were bred for short hair that is close together, helping them swim and fight the chill of the water temperature. These dogs even then were known for their friendly personality and their devotion to their owner, which is why today they are not only used for hunting, but also to assist the blind and disabled. The lab ranks number one for pheasant hunting and is in the family of the gundog and retriever. They were originally used for water retrieving, but their personalities are such that they are easily trained to do a number of jobs. They are a solid dog, with males weighing anywhere from 65 to 80 pounds, and 55 to 70 pounds for the female, and a height of 22 inches on average. They have a very easygoing and mellow personality and have a tendency towards weight problems if not allowed regular physical exercise. It is essential for the hunter to keep their dog well-trained throughout the year, otherwise the hunter will be disappointed come pheasant season. The lab prefers swimming and retrieving so family trips to the beach with a ball is where this dog will be happiest. They are extremely sociable, loving company, other pets, and strangers. They have a high affectionate level, so be prepared to give much of your free time to loving this dog. The lab is also an excellent bird dog because of it's ability to carry fowl of all sizes. It has a broad head and strong jaws that are able to carry doves, pheasant, and Canada geese. They have a heavy body and strong legs that make for excellent swimming, with natural colors of yellow, black, or chestnut. This moderate sized dog is an excellent choice for a hunter looking to add to his pheasant hunting game, and they'll be a perfect pet for the family in the off-season.
