Stress Has Defense Mechanisms
42894 Health & Fitness Jul 11, 2007 ergo_items Stress Has Defense Mechanisms There are defense mechanisms that one may unconsciously use in dealing with stress or unpleasant and unacceptable social circumstances or behaviors. They tend to help one make emotional adjustments in their everyday situations. However , habitual use has been known to cause one to become some what out of touch with reality. The most common defense is repression. This is the forcing of an unacceptable or painful idea; feeling; impulse into one's unconscious mind without one being aware of it. Often one may find that they wish something bad would happen to another out of anger or stress. These feelings won't vanish. They are placed in one's unconscious and have a tendency of reoccurring in one's dreams. Repression tends to protect one from unwanted messages about oneself. Displacement is the transfer of one's emotions about one to another. This has been known to cause one to show all the pent up anger and even explodes toward family or friends. This has been know to be an unconscious act on one's behalf. After the fact, one may realize one's action has been displaced from the point of where it originated to an innocent or unsuspecting target. Projection is where one may find blame in another unconsciously for one's own inadequacies. This can be extreme and lead to hostile ,even aggressive behavior. Often one blames another for one's painful feelings. Rationalization is when one can justify one's behavior with social acceptance and tends to ignore the real underlying behavior. This behavior is rather harmless but very destructive if habitual use is involved. Intellectualization is simply another means of denying one's social unacceptable behavior that can't be easily expressed. One may use this to avid confronting emotional conflicts or other stressful situations. Sublimation is an unconscious gesture to express one's unacceptable instinctive drives or impulses in acceptable ways. Temporary withdrawal is when one retreats from having to face painful or difficult situations. When one watches television or reads to avoid having to deal with an issue , one is withdrawn. Putting off the issue only worsens the situation. This causes one to experience anxiety; and stress . Malingering is when one tends to be sick to avoid dealing with unpleasant situations. This causes a lot of stress and anxiety. The one that is malingering , is usually as healthy as the next person. Denial is the refusal to admit something so one don't have to deal with a problem or situation. If you are one that don't accept the phases of life, this can lead you into experiencing anxiety . Often this is the case when one has failing health and refuses to believe the diagnosis. Regression happens in high levels of stress. One may tend to act in ways that are typically characteristic to that of an earlier developmental level. Problem solving is used to help one cope with difficult or bad situations. One should use careful thinking and confident decision making. Stress can trigger many defense mechanisms in an individual. Don't turn into a habitual user of these defense mechanisms.
