Warsaw Straddles The Vistula River
42807 Travel & Leisure Aug 13, 2007 amarticles-linda Warsaw Straddles The Vistula River Warsaw is the capital of Poland and its largest city. It straddles the Vistula River. Located in the heartland of the Masovian Plain and its average altitude is 100 metres above sea level, although there are some hills, mostly artificial located within the confines of the city. Although Warsaws Old Market Square was destroyed during the war, it has been since rebuilt according to the original plans and the Old Town has retained much of its charm. Today, crowds of visitors flock to its cafes, restaurants and museums. Warsaw is not only the political, administrative, scientific and cultural centre of the country, it has also become the business centre for commercial activities between west and east. An obligatory place to see is the Old Town a cultural lounge of the capital. During the tourist season, it becomes a stage for concerts in the open air, drama performances and art galleries. Romantic back streets sloping down to the river and stylish cafes oozing background music are perfect places for a break from sightseeing. The Old Town is also a place of interest for the enthusiasts of sacred art. After having suffered heavy war damage, the quarter was reconstructed with the fidelity that assured it a place in the list of UNESCO. The city is also home to an impressive array of cultural attractions, with a string of museums, including the National Museum, Warsaw Rising Museum, Chopin Museum and the haunting Pawiak Museum, which was used as a prison under the Nazis. The best way to learn about a city is sightseeing on foot. Hence, we recommend taking a walk in the Old Town and its surroundings the area with the biggest amount of monuments, museums and galleries. Warsaw is surrounded by attractive tourist destinations for example good walking and horse riding spots, as well as places where various sports can be practised. The climate is continental humid. The average temperature is 0 in January and 18 in July. Temperatures may often reach 30 in the summer. Yearly rainfall averages 680 millimetres the rainiest month being July. Lots to offer to visitors, but on the contrary to Prague, Paris or London, it has not been invaded by thousands of tourists yet, so youd better hurry up and see it now. Warsaw has an offer tailored to every demand. The greenery of parks, the noise of urban traffic. See the place for yourself and enjoy all it has to offer, have fun.
