41400 Health & Fitness > Alternative Medicine Jul 26, 2007 limevelyn Herbal Remedy To Treat Sport Injuries: Comfrey If you find yourself prone to getting broken ribs, musclar aches and pains due to playing sports, then you can consider using a herbal remedy to treat sport injuries. This herb has been used forhealing fractures for many thousands of years and although it is a plant, it is often called the knit bone. Modern studies have found that the comfrey plant contains the substance allantoin, which is helpful for promoting healthy growth and development in bones, cartilage, and muscles. The comfrey plant is also used in several folk medicine. During the Middle Ages, many women would take a bath in comfrey. These baths were often taken prior to marriage to help these women repair the hymen and restore their virginity. However, the use of comfrey for this purpose is not true and is not backed by scientific research. Herbalists describe the comfrey as a herb that is cool, slightly sweet, and moist. Other than allantonin, it also contains vitamin B-12, proteins, pyrroclizidine, insulin, tannins, mucilage, and steroidal saponins. The aerial parts of the plant are most commonly used to make herbal remedies. However, its leaves which contain rich sources of allantoin are also used often for external purposes. The best time to harvest the flowering parts of the comfrey is during early summer. Conversely, harvesting the roots should be done in the spring and in the fall when the allantoin levels are higher. You can make a herbal remedy using comfrey in various ways. The easiest would be to crush some comfrey herbs and then apply them topically to the injured part of your body. Herbalists believe that the allantoin can be absorbed through your skin and to promote the healing of bones, cartilage, and muscle. You can use this method for application in many situations, including for hairline fractures, broken ribs or broken toes. Ointments can be used for application onto the injured parts of your body as well. This would be a very convenient choice especially if fresh comfrey herbs are not readily accessible for you. You can also use the ointment for cases of arthritis and other muscular aches and pains. If you prefer, you can also use an infused herbal remedy oil made with the comfrey for arthritic pain and joints, bruises, sprains, and other traumatic injuries. For sports injuries, a regular cup of herbal infusion tea would also help. Evelyn Lim orefers to use a Herbal Home Remedy for treating minor illnesses.
