The Burglars You Let In
38307 Home & Family > Home Security Jul 3, 2007 Repeller The Burglars You Let In Ken was an industrious young man who had just moved into a new apartment. He had worked hard for the past two years to get everything he needed for his new home. His parents were generous people who were proud of their sons independence. They rewarded him with some expensive jewelry to impress his girl friend in the hope of gaining a daughter in law. They knew that would keep Ken happy and working hard. Ken loved to show off the jewelry to all his friends when they came over. So much so that he left them in plain sight in his bedroom for easy access. Ken had a house warming party to show his new apartment. He never really bothered to take any special precautions figuring he knew everyone and there was no danger. Ken was exhausted after the party and went right to bed. The next day he went to get one of the expensive watches his parents had given him and noticed it was gone. Ken realized that someone at the party had taken his watch. He never found the watch or the thief but he did find new wisdom. Most home protection is design to keep burglars out of your house, but what about the ones you let in? You have been taught that prevention is the best solution to crime. But how do you prevent a crime when the thief is someone you allow in your home. Repairmen, baby sitters, cable guy, or just friends can take something of value from you. You say no way these people are honest. They want steal from me. Hospital workers have been known to take jewelry off of patients sad but true. Housekeepers take from their employers. Neighbors have been known to steal from their neighbors. And even family members have been known to visit the darkside at take from other members. They usually take small things that are easy to conceal and expensive. Along with the usual credit cards and money they may take jewelry. Everythingelse requires too much planning and effort. Small valuables are favorites because they are usually undetectable. So how are you supposed to remove the temptation from criminals? Most thieves are looking for the quick gain, something they can slide in their pocket and leave without notice. You usually want notice until much later and by that time you want know who took it. Filing a police report want accomplish much because they simply do not have the resources to devote to small crimes. Placing your valuables in plain sight you can also save them from crooks. Sounds like kind of a crazy statement but it is very true. Thieves, even the ones you let in are conditioned to look in certain places for your valuables. If your valuables are not there they want waste time trying to figure out your plan. They will look in jewelry boxes, dresser drawers and other usual places. It is up to you to place your valuables where they ought not to be. People come up unique ideas on how to take care of valuables. The criminal might be a neighbor or child of a neighbor who visits and knows you. Seems far fetched but this is a reality. Placing your valuables in a safe may cause the thief to take the whole safe and open it later. Think about it if you were a criminal where is the last place you would look for valuables. If you want to protect your valuables place them in plain sight. I do not mean place them on a nightstand with a label that says valuables. I mean ordinary places where no one thinks you should place valuables. Thieves want expect your jewelry to be inside your toilet tank. They also do not believe your credit cards will be in the box of the VCR tape that you never watch. They will never look in soap containers or dirty clothes hamper for valuables. Some of these places maybe a little extreme but you get the idea. Johnny A.
