The Oldest Town on Bemuda
31104 Travel & Leisure > Destinations May 15, 2007 amarticles-linda The Oldest Town on Bemuda St George's is situated at the east end of the country and was Bermuda's one time capital and original settlement until 1815. In 2000, St Georges was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List and in 1996 was twinned with Lyme Regis, Dorset, England. It is the oldest town on the island being 400years old. Today, St. George's remains basically untouched most of its buildings were constructed in the 17th to 19th centuries, and the authorities have made a effort both to prevent development, and to hide any signs of later changes. Narrow streets such as Aunt Peggy's Lane and Barber's Alley remain just as they were centuries ago. The street lighting has a period style and the power and telephone lines are underground. The main part of the towns life is King's Square, featuring a pillory, stocks and whipping post where criminals were punished in days of old. The Town Crier appears here some times, in traditional costume, to re act scenes such as committing the town drunk to the stocks and securing the town gossip on the Ordnance Island ducking stool. St George is a small town with just a few shops and is not a night life place. This quiet town harbour is an idea of quiet nightly enjoyment. There are the bars where local and regional bands play jazz. If you want to snorkel, the Tobacco Bay Beach near the town of St George is great, There is horse drawn buggy rides which are used as a means of transport and a bus runs to locations of interest such as St David's Island, Clearwater Beach, and Fort St Catherine. The church of St Peters is one of the most cherished landmarks and is the oldest Anglican Church outside Britain. The oldest piece of Bermudian furniture on the Island, is the St Georges chalice that was presented in 1625.The original wooden structure was built in 1612. Among its many treasures are a Bible from 1594, Charles I silver, a mahogany altar, open cedar timber beams, beautiful chandeliers, and marble memorials. The grave of Sir Richard Sharples, Bermudas governor who was assassinated in 1973, lies on the east side. North of Kings Square is Somers Garden, which was named after the colonys founder. His ship, Sea Venture, was wrecked off the island in 1609. Sir George Somers built a replacement vessel from the local cedar, left some sailors behind to establish British claim to the islands and then headed home.
