Home to President of the United States
30246 Travel & Leisure > Destinations May 9, 2007 amarticles-linda Home to President of the United States Washington DC is the capital of the USA and is also a major holiday destination. The name stems from Christopher Columbus and George Washington. This attractive and vast city is an impressive sight, full of museums, monuments, public parks and buildings of interest. It is defined by the Potomac River which runs south east to north west of the city. The main industry is administration and government but the city benefits hugely from tourism. The best know high spots are Mount St Alban and Jenkins Hill. It became the nations capital on December 1 1800. With one of the cleanest safest and most efficient public transportation systems in the country. It is serviced by Metro rail and Metro bus. One of the best ways to experience Washington is on foot. Downtown is among one of Washingtons most popular tourist sites. Union Station was, at the time of its opening in 1907, the worlds largest train station. It is now a monolithic one stop shopping and dining mecca. After undergoing a 160 million dollars facelift, the now thriving entity hosts some 23 million visitors a year, over 100 specialty shops and restaurants, and a 9-screen movie theatre. The bulk of dining, nightlife and retail scenes can be found in four neighbourhoods Downtown, Dupont Circle Adams Morgan, and Georgetown. Great restaurants that highlight the towns multiculturalism and culinary quality include, Ben's Chili Bowl, Luigi's Pizza Obelisk and upscale Citronelle. After hours, nightlife awakens in the policy making town, and folks flock to hot spots like Madam's Organ and 9:30 Club and 18th Street Lounge. The White House is the official home and principal workplace of the President of the United States of America. The house is built of white painted Aqua sandstone. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW in Washington D.C. The property is part of Presidents Park and owned by the National Park Service. The White House Complex is protected by the United States Park Police and United States Secret Service. The Eastern Market has provided DC residents with produce, meat, bread and other necessary goods since 1873. The market is the last of Washingtons 19th century market being used. The south hall is the last remaining traditional market in Washington. On weekends, vendors pitch everything from crafts clothes and antiques. The place is not only a tribute to DC's heritage, but a great stop off for a quick bite or a souvenir.
