Schmoozing is Networking!
29824 Arts & Entertainment > Music Jun 20, 2007 tycohen Schmoozing is Networking! Schmoozing, Networking, hanging out, whatever you want to call it, it's crucial in the music industry. Don't be afraid of networking, it's not as hard as you would imagine. The best way to become skilled at networking and to make connections is to just hang out. Even if the bar scene and club scene is not for you, there are other ways to gain music contacts. For instance, hang out in record stores or at the local studio. Don't be afraid to ask questions and develop friendships because this is incredibly important for your career. A lot of people, especially in the independent music field are afraid that schmoozing looks like ass-kissing or sucking up. Networking is absolutely not either one of these. People in every career field want and need to meet people to further their career. And this is especially important for you in the music industry. Basically what you are going to need to do is immerse yourself in the inner circle or people in the industry. Whether it is going to parties, CD releases, record signings, shows or special events, you need to do it. Your goal needs to be to meet people and make a positive impression. Folks in the music industry are not hard to find because there are plenty of them. Talk a look in your local paper or magazine to see a list of upcoming events. In my area, there is a paper called the Folio and it lists just about every event going on in the tri-county area for every genre of music and art. Attend as many as you can and take your business cards or demos with you, just in case. Your independent music will need all the promotion it can get. Do you have music schools or programs in your area? A lot of colleges host seminars and conferences where important contacts might attend. It doesn't hurt to check them out. Stay afterward and ask questions. A lot of people in the music industry love for their ego to be stroked so go ahead and do that, it may pay off in the end. Depending on where you are in your career or education, you should consider an internship with a record company or publishing company. This is not possible for all people but it may be for you. Obviously, music contacts will be all over the place in these types of places. If this is not an option for you, then check out jobs a large music stores. In the independent music field, never underestimate the power of technology, namely email. Email addresses aren't hard to get. Take a shot and shoot people emails with a short message about your music or band. It never hurts to try and the most they can do is ignore you. When networking, remember this above all else, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. You want your music contacts to believe you are talented, energized and worth their time. Look your best and don't look to desperate. If they don't act interested in you, then move on. After all, you don't want to be a music industry stalker. Have fun and try and meet as many people as you can! Owner of Platinum Millennium publishing, former record label owner & national music industry seminar speaker/panelist.
