The Most Beautiful Town of Cyprus
29731 Travel & Leisure > Destinations Jun 20, 2007 amarticles-linda The Most Beautiful Town of Cyprus Located on the south west coast of the island of Cyprus is the city of Paphos and it dates from 1400 BC. Local people say that the city is built on the spot where the Greek Goddess of Love Aphrodite, was born. In Greco Roman times Paphos was the island's capital. Pafos is one of the ancient towns and most beautiful of Cyprus The population of Paphos at the end of 2001 was 47300, and is a popular sea and a fast developing tourist resort. It also has an attractive fishing harbour. It is divided into two major quarters, Kato Pafos, by the sea, is built around the mediaeval port and contains most of the luxury hotels. Ktima, on the sea terrace, is the main residential district. The cuisine is healthy apart from their love of syrup soaked pastries. The Cyprus people cook with less oil than their Mediterranean neighbours. All the food is cooked fresh on a daily basis. Coral Bay is very good for children and teenagers, with loads of water sports. The water is very safe, but one bad point is you have to walk everywhere in flip flops as the sand gets to hot. There are lots of designer shops here too but there are too expensive for most of us to shop in. Go down the hill from the market and you will also find a Co op Store here this Co op is full of items produced in Cyprus, including food stuffs. The main street to know at night is Agiou Antoniou, known locally as either Nightlife Street or Bar Street. The pubs stay open until 2am and the clubs until 6. One end of the Pano Paphos contains the noisy night people. This street which has 20 or so pubs and a couple of small clubs, this the expensive part of town. . Journey a few hundred yards down the road and things quieten down and the prices drop. Pafos medieval fort is in Kato Paphos harbour. Originally as a Byzantine fort built to protect the harbour, it was rebuild by the Lusignans in the 13th century and then dismantled by the Ottomans after they captured the island in the 16th century. Tomb of the Kings spread over a vast area, the impressive under ground tombs date back to the 4th century BC. They are carved out of solid rock with some being decorated with Doric Pillars. High officials rather than Kings were buried here. Douglas Scott writes for The Car Hire Specialist. and is a free lance writer for Paphos Villa Rental Site send email to amarticles-linda
