How to Identify a Skin Disorder
28866 Health & Fitness > Beauty Jun 19, 2007 igr407 How to Identify a Skin Disorder ome people figure that a skin disorder is something that has to be serious, like severe psoriasis or skin cancer. Truth is, a skin disorder can be less threatening than that. For example, some skin conditions are limited to the topical surface of the skin, while others sink deeper into skin tissues, and right on down to the muscle tissue. Knowing what types of skin disorders there are, and being able to identify some of the most common ones, may help keep your skin, and underlying tissues and organs, healthy and free from disease. When most people think of skin disorders, they think rashes, shingles, perhaps severe acne and even things like ringworm and measles. Would you consider athlete's foot a skin disorder? Well, it is, and is caused by a fungal infection, as is Candida and ringworm. Other skin disorders or conditions may be edema, melasma, various types of rashes and age spots. While some of these are common, many others aren't, and knowing what's what can save you worry and money on treatments that just don't work. Moles are typically normal spots no bigger than a pencil eraser and are usually round, or close to it in shape. Normal moles are typically found in various shades of brown or pink and are nothing to be alarmed about. However, if a mole shows irregular edges and is larger than a pencil eraser, it's a good idea to go have it looked at. Dangerous or cancerous moles are often black, gray or blue, and one half usually doesn't match the other half of the mole. In addition to moles, other skin disorder issues may be caused by insect bites or allergies. Some of the most common are those caused by the brown recluse spider. The bites from this tiny spider can become severely infected, causing extensive tissue damage if not treated properly and promptly. Scabies is another temporary skin disorder caused by an insect that looks like a wavy line that ends in a red bump. Various types of dermatitis can produce skin disorder concerns if not recognized and treated, such as several forms known as eczema, perioral or stasis dermatitis. All of these cause inflammation, redness, and itching. Poison ivy is another type of temporary skin disorder caused by a plant. Some of the most common types of skin disorder found among children are German measles, measles, chicken pox and diaper rash. Each of these produces inflammation, redness and itching that react well to topical ointments and creams. When in doubt as to the cause or treatment of any unusual skin disorder, it's best to obtain the advise of a doctor or nurse practitioner before attempting to self-treat. Many skin issues start off small, and if misdiagnosed, may cause trouble further down the line. Being able to differentiate between different types of any skin disorder will enable those suffering from them to obtain prompt and proper treatment, and encourage healthy lifestyles that serve not only as preventions, but remedies to skin problems that afflict millions every day.
