How to Use Tracleer Safely
28522 Health & Fitness Jun 19, 2007 johnsonlawgroup How to Use Tracleer Safely Tracleer is used in the treatment of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH), and works by reducing the blood levels of a molecule called endothelin. This molecule, which is thought to be partly responsible for the development of the condition, is naturally present in the blood. In people with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension endothelin levels are raised, causing blood vessels to become constricted, leading to high blood pressure in the lungs. Using Tracleer safely requires knowledge of possible side effects as well as full disclosure to your doctor about your medical history. Before taking Tracleer Tracleer treatment may be dangerous for some people, so it is important to be thorough when discussing PPH treatment options with your doctor. In general, if any of the following applies to you, other drug options may be considered: * Pregnancy or breastfeeding * Allergies to any ingredients used in Tracleer * Liver or kidney function problems * Congestive heart failure * Blood disorders such as anemia or high levels of blood transaminases Additionally, you must tell your doctor if you are taking any other prescription medications, or any over-the-counter medications or supplements before you start Tracleer treatment. Tracleer and Drug Interactions Tracleer is known to interact with a long list of both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. These drugs may reduce the efficacy of Tracleer or may cause unwanted side effects when taken in conjunction with Tracleer. Even common drugs such as Aleve and Advil are on this list, so it is important to discuss use of any medications with your doctor to make sure they will not compromise the efficacy of your PPH treatment. Tracleer also reduces the efficacy of most contraceptives. This includes oral and injected medications as well as contraceptive implants. Side Effects of Tracleer Treatment Minor side effects of Tracleer treatment include flushed skin, irritation of the nose or throat, headaches, and stomach upsets. These side effects should be discussed you're your doctor, as they may indicate that your Tracleer treatment dosage needs to be adjusted. Serious side effects include dizziness, fainting, irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, swelling of the legs or ankles, and sudden weight gain. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these symptoms, or any other sudden, unexplained symptoms. Emergency medical treatment should also be sought if an overdose of Tracleer is suspected. Symptoms of a Tracleer overdose include severe headaches, a fast heart beat, nausea, and vomiting. The use of Tracleer for PPH treatment is known to cause liver damage in some people. Symptoms of liver damage also require immediate medical attention as well as tests to determine the extent of liver damage. Symptoms include yellow skin or eyes, fever, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, pale-colored bowel movements, and excessive tiredness. Using Tracleer Safely Tracleer can cause dizziness, so it is recommended to avoid driving or similar activities, until you know how your body will react to this treatment. Tracleer treatment should not be stopped except upon medical advice, and should only be carried out under close medical supervision. The symptoms of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension will return once treatment stops, as the condition is not curable. If you miss a dose of Tracleer, the missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. If you remember your missed dose when it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one that was missed and resume your normal schedule from the next dose. Do not take two or more doses at once, as an overdose may result. Tracleer is a known teratogenic substance. This means it can cause severe birth defects if taken during pregnancy. For this reason, pregnant women are unable to take Tracleer, and women of child-bearing age should use at least two effective types of birth control while using Tracleer. As mentioned previously, Tracleer is also known to reduce the efficacy of contraceptive medications and devices, therefore women of child-bearing age are also required to take monthly pregnancy tests while being treated with Tracleer. Whether or not Tracleer is able to be secreted in breast milk is unknown; because the drug is not confirmed to be safe for children it is recommended that women who are using Tracleer do not breast-feed. Most importantly, stay in contact with your doctor. Keep a close eye on any side effects that occur, and inform your doctor immediately if you experience any. Please do not use this article as a substitute for professional medical help. If you have any questions or concerns about your health or your PPH treatment, ask your doctor or another medical professional for advice. Nick Johnson is lead counsel with Johnson Law Group.
