The police are cracking down on the possession and owning of fake ids and if you aren't careful, you can get in a world of trouble. Although individual state laws vary, it is fairly common that a conviction of owning, making, selling and utilizing fake IDs will appear on your permanent criminal record. In addition, people who possess, use or distribute fake IDs can also be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor which is also punishable by a fine of $1,000 or less, paying court costs, and 100 hours of community service. So, the next time, you think about 'borrowing' another person's legitimate ID card, making or purchasing a fake one, you better think twice. There are currently new mechanisms in place that allow ids to be put through card readers to check for validity. In addition, police and others are becoming more competent at evaluating holograms and incorrect lettering and codes. And, if they catch you with a fake id or making one, you could be in a world of trouble.
