Seventh Largest Commercial Region in Germany
Mannheim is situated at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Neckar. The region is the seventh largest commercial region in Germany. Mannheim's city symbol is the Wasserturm the Water Tower, located in the Eastern part of the down town open shopping mall, called Planken. Mannheim is situated in one of the warmer regions of Germany in the Rhine valley. The summer high temperatures are around 30 degree, at night from June to August around 20 degree. The winters are mild and most time over zero degree. Not much snow. In spring and autumn there are more rainy days, especially April May and November. The main shopping area is the street leading from the water tower to the Paradeplatz, the centre of the down town area. While streets in down town Mannheim have no names, but letters and numbers, this street is known as "die Planken", meaning planks, wooden boards. Mannheim Farmers' Market is the largest open air market in the area. Many restaurants chefs go there early in the morning to buy fresh products. It is held year round. During May you can get asparagus there. Late summer, early fall is a good place to find lots of fresh mushrooms. From November on they offer chestnuts for roasting. In addition to vegetables, bread and meat you can also get lots of fresh flowers there. Planken is the historical street running between the water tower and the parade ground, wooden planks used to be laid out so that ladies could take a walk without getting their feet wet. It is now a pedestrian precinct with elegant shops, cafes and shopping arcades. Planken is one of Mannheim's liveliest shopping areas. The famous composer Mozart wrote some of the his best music while living in this part of Germany. Mozart festivals are held throughout the area during the early spring. The greatest largest urban parks is the Luisen park, found in the southwest Germany. Luisen park contains a wide range of attractions that surround a huge open grassy field for people to go and relax. These include a boat ride along a artificial canals, a huge bird sanctuary, a petting zoo with cows and donkeys and other animals, a rose garden, and a Chinese garden. The Chinese garden is the park's most recent addition, with oriental buildings and rock gardens with artificial waterfalls, and a teahouse featuring a host of Asian flavours.
