If You Need Money For College Consider Government Grants
26358 Reference & Education Jun 16, 2007 If You Need Money For College Consider Government Grants Education is a very important part of life; you need a college degree to succeed in today's world. Paying for college however is very expensive. The government has elected to help today's students attend college easier with various financial aid opportunities. There are many scholarships and grants available to those in need. Scholarships are generally for academic or athletic excellence and do not need to be repaid. Government grants are another form of student award money which is similar to a loan with the exception they do not need to be repaid. Government grant money is available for many different reasons. One reason a student may qualify for grants are their income. By using a formula set by each college, grant income eligibility requirements are either met or exceeded. From that point there may be other eligibility requirements in order to qualify. Every government grant is a little different. Although qualifications for grant money may differ all grant money is similar in that you will not be required to repay it after you have finished college. In order to find these different government grants it is best to begin with the Free Application for Student Aid otherwise known as the FAFSA. You can obtain an application from your high school guidance counselor, college financial aid offices, or by going online. You can also get help to fill out the application if you need it. By filling out this one application you will be notified of any available grants for you individual situation. Once again there are eligibility requirements to be met such as income guidelines, college choice and availability. It is also very important to pay close attention to required filing dates. The earlier in the year you apply the more grants available so be sure to get an application in as soon after January 1st of the year you intend to attend college. Most colleges have additional requirements for entry besides payment so it is important to have good communication with your intended school. You should apply for the school first so you are sure all qualifications are met. It is best to do this as soon as the college will allow. Once you have been accepted you can send in the FAFSA to apply for grant monies. Some colleges will require you to complete a CSS profile to gather certain information that the college uses to make decisions about entrance into their facilities. You can fill out this profile via the Internet and it is generally available in October. It is a good idea to fill this application out as soon as possible to get the most from your college search. No matter what your income is there are programs designed to help everyone have an opportunity to attend college and receive a valuable education. By using government grant money that is available many people ail be better able to attain quality higher education. Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
