In this day and age of technology and identity theft, it's important to know exactly what's going on in your credit report. This protects you and your finances from the rest of the world. If you are shopping for a loan or for insurance, you want to make sure that your credit report reflects who you truly are. Those that you are asking to borrow money from need to know that you will pay your debts back. They know that by looking at your credit report. If there are delinquent and unpaid accounts stacking up, that will not look good and may result in the denial of what you're looking for. Some information is left mistakenly on your credit report that does not belong. This can be negative information which would again impact your ability to receive a loan or insurance. If you check on the credit report, you are more likely to catch these mistakes and correct them before they become problems. In the same vein, some of the information on your report can be extremely old and never updated. Therefore, you may have a credit account open for several years without realizing it which adds to the amount of possible debt you could incur. This amount may deter possible creditors from giving you the best interest rate on your loans. If you've stopped using a credit account, be sure to call the credit card company to cancel and close the account. It will then reflect on a closed account on your report. It may seem frivolous to pay for something that you can see again free in a couple of months, yet the more you look at that report, the better prepared you'll be to handle anything that comes your way. Having complete control over your finances and financial reputation is a good thing that will reap many benefits. Identity Theft It is scary how someone can get so much information about you from a little credit card number, but it's out there. You have to be prepared for that. Looking periodically into your credit report is a great way to avoid identity theft or keeping the damage limited if your identity has been compromised. It's an undisputed fact; there are people in the world willing to sift through garbage in order to get credit card offers or other credit information from you. This information can lead to serious financial trouble if allowed to go on for an extended period of time. A person can use a charge card on the internet for just about anything and your balances could be skyrocketing, even as we speak. If you periodically view your credit report, you may be able to catch this person rather quickly. When they charge a time is recorded, therefore, this time is available to help determine who is the real person behind the fake one. If watched carefully, police could use this as a tool to find the person doing the charging and prosecute. If a person has been using your identity to charge all kinds of goods and services, as soon as those bills aren't being paid, it's you the creditors are going to come after. They will call you to find out why the payments haven't been made, and when you dispute the fact, you will have to go through the process of having to prove that you are not the person who did the charging. Checking your credit report from time to time can alert you more quickly. You will see a status change or you may even notice that you have a few too many credit accounts which will indicate an identity thief. This may be a more direct route then having to prove all of that is not yours two or three months after your identity was stolen. You will be able to recover your losses and put a stop to those identity thieves. Identity theft is frightening. Sadly, it's a frightening reality. Be sure to protect yourself from this type of thievery by taking advantage of reviewing your credit report closely and often. Salvaging What's Left After an Identity Theft When your identity is stolen, the very core of your being feels violated. There's someone out there in the world pretending that they are you, creepy. Hopefully you will have caught them in the end. The real problem after they're gone is cleaning up the mess. By the time you realize that someone's stolen your identity, it's likely that at least a month, if not two will have passed. Credit companies will call you if they suspect something, but these criminals know to use them sometimes only which would keep them off the radar. By the time the payments are not being made, you may have already accumulated quite a bill. If you have been the victim of identity theft, you could feasibly be in for thousands of dollars. If you've been made the victim of identity theft, as soon as you find out, cancel all cards being used. This will stop the person from using your card any further, then you can have a new one sent to your home. If there are no cards to use, no one at this point can use them. Immediately you'll want to start the process of disputing the charges on your bill. Call the credit company, discuss your situation, and they will work with you to resolve the issue with no cost to you. Recovering shouldn't be too difficult. There should be documentation from those that you spoke to which will explain about the identity theft. This information will be placed in your credit report as soon as your claims have been verified. That should take care of any lowered credit scores. They should rebound quickly and nicely. Identity thieves do not realize that they're taking away you when they steal credit information. Until that happens, I don't know that this is something that will stop or get worse. Protecting who you are should be the foremost thought in your mind when you go shopping or out in public in general.
