While Marrakech lays claim to being Moroccos cultural capital, Casablanca is synonymous with wealth, style and big city variety. Casablancas excellent business credentials and its Hollywood immortality make it North Africas most visited city. It is often called the United States of Americia. Casablanca is essentially the capital of Morocco and is also known as Casa or Dar el Baida. It was established as a town in 1906 with a population of 20000 With a population of over 3 million now, it resembles a Southern European city. It is Africas second largest city. A large, sprawling city, taxis are the best option for getting around, especially at night as certain parts of the city have a high crime rate. Restaurants, prices in the centre are often double the price of the rest of Morocco, and if you head out to the sea side parts of Casablanca, prices are even higher. Casablanca has a wider range of bars and restaurants. The discos near the amusement park, near the train station, are apparently clean. The old city of Casablanca is conveniently located but as you enter, you will see that it is not all that old, but still, it is very nice, even if it is small. The best parts of the old city is made up of shopping areas, where all types of products are sold, and you should not either miss out on the less visited quarters the areas where people live where colours and shapes and curves brings you far away from elegance of downtown Casablanca. The old city is more reminiscent of the Casablanca of Bergman and Bogart. Moroccan cooking is characterised a mixture of tastes, colours aromas and by rich spices Couscous is a granular semolina and the countrys staple food and is cooked with lamb egg, vegetables and chicken. Djaja mahamara is a popular chicken dish stuffed with almonds, couscous and raisins. Casablanca port is Moroccos biggest and busiest port and one of the largest on the African continent. It has a number of deep water quays, the port has a lot of oil tankers and cruise liners One of the places to vist is the Hassan II Mosque it was commissioned as a gift to King Hassan II for his 60th birthday in 1989. The largest mosque outside Saudi Arabia it houses up to 25000 worshippers.
