The Role Of Parents In Imparting Driving Skills
18087 Home & Family > Parenting Nov 30, 1999 The Role Of Parents In Imparting Driving Skills So you passed your driving test the very first time with flying colors, eh? But that does not mean you have mastered driving. It is just the first step in a very long and strenuous journey. Young folks tend to get overconfident and cocky and completely forget the fact that they are new on the road and still have to learn the rules of the road. The most testing times in the life of a driver are these initial times when the elation of clearing the driving test blinds the reality of driving on the roads today. Driving no longer is what it used to be some years ago when almost all the drivers were well trained. Today, the number of vehicles on the road is increasing exponentially whereas the number of new drivers is increasing at an even faster rate. Youngsters with little or no driving experience are seen gallivanting in cars belonging to their parents. Moreover, it has become very easy for anyone to get a car with their ever increasing pay packages and new car loan schemes. It is high time that the Road Safety Officials stand up and take notice before these young newbies wreak havoc on the roads. If you notice closely, you will find that every driver has driving skills similar to that of their parents. This is because the very first driving exposure for these kids happens in the car of their parents. So it is the duty of the parents to infuse good road manners and driving skills into their kids from day one. Hence, your driving skills begin to develop from the very day your mom took you to the grocery store for the very first time in her car or the day when your dad took you for a drive. How well you fare in the first driving tests greatly depends on your experience in the car belonging to your parents and the driving skills they imparted to you. And kids these days, who are forever on the move, pick up habits of everyone around them including driving habits irrespective of them being good or bad. So parents must start training their kids when they are young no matter how troublesome it may seem. For the life of your kids and that of other drivers and people on the road depends on this initial training that you impart to your kids. So it is definitely worth the time and energy spent on the young kid. Start off by washing your car together and keeping it sparkling clean. Show them all the important parts in the car and explain to them the functions of each. It is all up to the parents to develop and nurture the driving skills of their kids and manners but without pampering them too much.
