Hazing The Gates Of Hell
17048 Society Nov 30, 1999 Hazing The Gates Of Hell Dylan was a freshman in a large eastern University. Before he entered the school, he had heard about all the fun of college life. He was looking forward with excitement. His plans included joining the most popular fraternity on campus. He was really thrilled and figured he would fit right in. He heard rumors that some of the fraternity hazing was pretty intense. Others had made it, so he figured how bad could it be. Although the University staff frowned upon hazing, the students secretly continued the rituals. Ceremonies were held in the strictest confidence. Dylan decided to apply for acceptance into the most admired fraternity on campus. His application was reviewed. One day Dylan was approached by the fraternity president. He asked Dylan if he really wanted to be in the fraternity. Dylan said yes. Dylan was accepted on contingent basis. He would become a full member when he completed the necessary tasks, which would last for several weeks. At the end of the tasks, he would have a special initiation ceremony. Despite warnings from some of his close friends and fellow students, about the darkside of the fraternity, Dylan accepted. He went through many weeks of humiliating experiences. Then came time for his initiation ceremony. He was blindfolded and taken to an unknown location. He was told to kneel and asked if he would accept what was about to happen next. He figured it was some kind of crowing ceremony, so he said yes. At that moment he felt a kick to his ribs. He fell over. His instinct was to defend himself but he could not. Several individuals in hoods started kicking and punching him. This was the way they performed the final initiation. This went on for several minutes. Then a voice said halt. The voice told Dylan, if he found his way back to the campus on his own, he would be a full member of the fraternity. The individuals left. Dylan was rolling around on the ground in severe pain. He could not walk. At that moment he remembered the cell phone in his pocket. He prayed it was not damaged during the attack. He managed to call 911, but he did not know his location. After several minutes they were able to pinpoint his cell phone signal. Emergency crews arrived and took Dylan to a hospital. He was treated for several bruised ribs. He spent several days in the hospital. This was not what he expected when he decided to join the fraternity. He thought, this nothing more than an educated street gang. Dylan wanted no part of that type of behavior. He never officially joined the fraternity and became a top spokesman against hazing on campus. How far are you willing to go to belong to a certain social group? Are you willing to be beat within inches of death? Some people are willing to experience such violence just to belong to certain groups. Colleges and university students frequently experience violent hazing as rights of passage. Although it has gotten lots of media attention in the past few years, hazing has been and still is a growing phenomenon. College students who rush to enter fraternities and other underground groups are met with humiliating and sometimes violent hazing. Students who believe they would otherwise be left out, are willing to experience such treatment. Sometimes what is meant to be harmless taunting can be a very violent mania. Students sometimes experience beatings and forms of torture at the hands of their peers and associates. They often have no means of escape or defending themselves. When things get out of control the student must be prepared to defend themselves. Johnny A.
