The Story Of Bill And James
This is the story of a man you may already know. You most likely have interaction with this person everyday. For the purpose of this story, we will name him Bill. Bill wakes up everyday at the same time. He drinks his morning coffee and reads his newspaper. He proceeds into the shower and dresses himself to be sure he leaves his home with enough time to get to his place of work- his job. By the way, j-o-b stands for journey of the broke (sorry, just had to get that in there). Bill is now stuck in the same traffic he has been stuck in for X amount of years. Or, Bill may not be stuck in any traffic because he leaves his home at an ungodly hour to ensure he beats the highway jam. Bill arrives at his desk/cubicle/office and drops anchor for another day of taking orders. He grabs his favorite coffee mug and saunters to the office coffee pot for his third cup this morning. He exchanges pleasantries with other corporate slaves who have arrived in the office around the same time. The conversation goes like this " Hey Mary how are you?" Mary's response "Not bad for a Tuesday." or "I'm alive aren't I? That's all we can ask.." and on and on the mindless drivel goes. Eventually Bill makes his way from the coffee pot to his cubie and reads a bunch of emails that don't matter. Then he gets on his favorite websites that revolve around sports, politics and other matters. Bill is a lot like Cliff Claven, the character on the old TV show Cheers. He knows a little about a lot and can carry on a five minute conversation on many different topics. Once the conversation exceeds that time, he needs to exit stage right before he is exposed. Everyone likes Bill, he doesn't have a lot of enemies. Bill then prepares his work day. He does what he is told to do, whatever those orders are. He doesn't really do much more than that. Bill grabs a few more cups of coffee up to his lunch hour. Bill then proceeds to turn his lunch hour into a lunch hour and a half. He comes back to his office in a food coma and dreads the rest of the day. The bell rings at 5pm and Bill is out the door. He sits in traffic listening to the local sports talk radio show, contemplating calling in a topic he feels passionate about. He arrives home after a long commute and prepares for an evening of television. Bill receives a phone call from a co-worker complaining about a new process being implemented at work. They commiserate and cry on each others shoulders. Then the caller says "Can you believe the special treatment James is receiving?" James is a fellow co-worker who always seems to be ahead of the game. Here's a little background on James. James does not get involved in the coffee pot chatter. James does not wait for orders to be given to him. James does not have a lunch hour, he eats when he can, usually when he's not working on his skills, trying to better himself. James is a go-getter. He doesn't care what goes on in the corporate slave camp, it doesn't affect his performance. He cares only about bettering himself, thereby raising his market value through the roof. James hears "It must be nice" from many people. What the others do not realize is James pays the price everyday for his success. He works harder on himself than he does on his job. He doesn't blame anyone for his problems and knows everyday is a blessing. While Bill and his co-worker are sharing their problems, James is reading "Think And Grow Rich" highlighting every page with notes. As for Bill, he hangs up the phone with his co-worker and nods off to sleep while watching his favorite TV show. He wakes up the next day and gets back into the same routine. except instead of hearing "Not bad for a Tuesday." from Mary, he hears "It's hump day Bill, almost Friday." Let me ask you a question: Are you Bill or James? Here's another question: If you're an employer, which one of these guys would you want taking on the next great initiative in your organization? Sadly, most people are Bill's. I challenge you to be James and not get caught up in the "It must be nice" crowd. Work harder on yourself than you do on your job and blessings will be showered upon you.
