Detroit - From A Tourist's Perspective
10744 Arts & Entertainment > Humanities Mar 1, 2007 Graham Rathbourne Detroit - From A Tourist's Perspective In years past people didn't think of Detroit, in the Midwestern United States, as a destination city for a vacation. It was known more as a business area. However, things are changing and Detroit is definitely a place to consider for an entertaining visit.

Detroit is primarily drawing attention owing to the developments in Woodward Avenue. The city has numerous theatres and that host various performances and concerts, which has made this district an important place on the tourist map. You should enjoy a show while you are in the city by finding ahead what shows are playing during your visit to the city. You will love to watch the show as there is always one that suits everyone's taste, requirement, passions and pockets.

If culture is an interest then you're in luck. The Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the largest in North America. This fine museum houses collections from many eras and countries. For instance you'll find Asian, American, Ancient, and 20th century art. Some of their most famous paintings are by masters such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Degas, and Rembrandt.

Another popular museum is the Henry Ford Museum. This museum is filled with information about the automobile history of North America as well as a timeline and chronicle of the many inventions created by Henry Ford. It was Ford himself who established the museum in hopes of educating the public about inventions such as the steam locomotive and motorized roller skates.

The Motown Historical Museum is yet another museum that is in the heart of Detroit but you won't find any paintings hanging on the walls. Within the Motown museum you'll find the original recording studio that was used by Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, and Smokey Robinson. You can also see many of the memorabilia made famous by popular musicians from around the country.

As are most regions, the Midwest is a unique area of the United States, and has its own culture and arts. A great way to introduce some of it to you and your children is by making a trip through the New Detroit Science Center. It's a remarkably fun way allowing the family to interact with science, rather than just looking at exhibits. For example they use Digistar technology. With it you can make a virtual visit to space and view our universe, viewing Mars and some of the other planets. You may want to consider that it may be too technical for very young children.

The Detroit Zoo is one of the largest wildlife exhibits in North America. In fact it is known worldwide for its gorilla and chimpanzee population. Some other favorites at the Detroit Zoo are the Arctic Ring of Life, the Amphibian Conservation Center, and an Innuit Village, highlighting the lives and animal species of our neighbors in the far north.

The best time to visit Detroit is in the spring or fall months, which are less crowded than the months of summer when families travel during the school vacation. Unless you love winter, you'll want to avoid Detroit during these cold months when the city shivers under a blanket of snow.

With so many attractions waiting for your attention you'll want to plan a trip to Detroit the next time you need a relaxing weekend away. Your travel agent can help you find the right accommodations as well as arrange your travel plans.
